Creta Maris began as a dream shared by two visionary people: Nikos and Theano Metaxas. With a passion for authentic Cretan hospitality, respect for tradition, and love for the island’s soul, they set out to create not just a hotel—but a living village of warmth, memory, and meaning. These were the years when everything took shape.
1975-1985 - The Beginning of a Vision
After a year of pilot operation with just the Bungalows completed in 1974, the resort officially opens its doors in 1975. With the Maris Buildings finalised, full operation begins and the reception moves to its current location—designed by architect Mr Stragalis and founder Nikos Metaxas as a timeless welcome area, featuring ancient-style artefacts, traditional amphorae, and a signature chandelier that remained a centrepiece until 2022.
1975-1985 - The Beginning of a Vision
A major flood hits the resort in September. Much of the hotel’s equipment—only a year or two old—is destroyed, including storage rooms, linens, kitchen supplies, and oil reserves. Yet what stands out is not the damage, but the calm and determined response of Nikos Metaxas, who guides the team through recovery with clarity and resilience.
These were the years of foundation—of turning dreams into stones, memories into walls, and hospitality into legacy. Everything that Creta Maris is today began here, with the heart, vision, and belief of two people who built more than a hotel. They built a way of welcoming the world.
The late '80s and early '90s were a vibrant period for both Creta Maris and Cretan tourism as a whole. These years were marked by prosperity, social celebration, and deeper bonds with both guests and the local community.
